After the Storm: 5 Mistakes That Can Delay Your Claim

Avoid these common errors to protect your payout and speed up your recovery.

When a hurricane passes, the damage it leaves behind can be overwhelming — physically, emotionally, and financially. In that moment, it’s easy to overlook a few key steps.

Unfortunately, those small missteps can have a big impact on your insurance claim.

To help you navigate the recovery process with confidence, here are five of the most common post-storm mistakes — and how to avoid them.

1. Waiting Too Long to File

Time is critical. Delaying your claim, even by a few days, can complicate the process. It may raise questions with your carrier about when the damage occurred — especially if other storms hit in the same season.

Tip: File your claim with your carrier as soon as it’s safe to assess the damage, then contact your Liberty advisor so we can support you through the process.

2. Tossing Damaged Items Too Early

We get it — it’s tempting to clear debris or toss ruined furniture quickly. But your adjuster needs to see the full extent of the damage.

Tip: Take clear photos and videos before you throw anything away. When in doubt, save the item or get written approval from the adjuster before disposing of it.

3. Not Keeping Receipts for Temporary Repairs

You may need to make urgent fixes to prevent further damage — tarping a roof, boarding up windows, or pumping out water.

That’s smart. But without receipts, those costs may not be reimbursed.

Tip: Keep a folder or envelope with all storm-related receipts, invoices, and communications. Digital backups are even better.

4. Assuming Coverage = Automatic Payout

Even if you’re covered, policy limits, deductibles, exclusions, and documentation requirements still apply. This is especially true for windstorm and flood claims, where coverage types can overlap or get complicated.

Tip: Ask your advisor for help interpreting your policy language and understanding where potential gray areas might exist.

5. Going It Alone

You don’t have to manage the claims process by yourself. Your Liberty advisor is here to advocate for you, help with communication, and make sure your questions get answered quickly.

Tip: Let us know as soon as you’ve filed a claim. We can work alongside you to keep things moving and avoid delays.
