The system traces to 1954, when dentists and employers in Washington, Oregon and California organized the first dental service plans, and it operates today as 39 independent member companies serving all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Plan designs span PPO networks, the DeltaCare USA DHMO, and individual and family policies sold directly to consumers. Financial strength is rated by member company rather than nationally, so the number that applies depends on which Delta Dental entity issues your contract. AM Best upgraded Delta Dental of California and its affiliates to an A+ Financial Strength Rating in July 2026.
